Inter school Karate championship to commence today
MUKESH SHARMA
Kalimpong,
August 23:
With
an aim to produce Olympians from the hills an inter school Karate championship
will be organized at the St Philomena from tomorrow. Prior to the championship
an exhibition match was held today at the school’s premises. Karatekas from
Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Gorubathan, Jaigaon and Sikkim will be participating in
the said contest. This is for the 2nd time that St Philomena is
organizing an inter school event.
The
organizers claim that through this competition they will be bringing out the
finest sportsmen who will later be representing the country in international
events. They also informed that the participants from Rockvale Academy,
Saptashri Gyanpeeth, Gandhi Ashram, Seven Day school, St Michael, St Teresa,
Kanya Vidyalaya and the students from different schools of Jaigaon and
Gorubathan have already arrived for tommorows event.
The
Secretary of the Gorkha Hill Taekwondo Association (GHTA), Praveen Chandra
Pradhan speaking about the championship informed that Karate has been
recognized as one of the important sports by the Olympic Association and also
the Indian Olympic Association has regarded it as a high level sport. However,
till date no karateka from India has been able to qualify for the Olympics.
Though the players have achieved success making Poomsae and Kata as their base,
still Fighting Taekwondo remains as the main event and it is much tough to
reach at international level under this.
The
Principal of St Philomena, Sister Krishant Rai mentioned that Taekwondo comes
of help to those students who are weak in studies. Taekwondo which can be taken
up as a profession can also be used for self defence.
The
Secretary of the organizing committee, Marie Claire Rai said that championship
conducted with an aim to promote the talents of the hills has proved to be a
strong platform for the players who participated in the 1st
championship held last year.
