Mamata Banerjee, the Bengal chief minister seems to have turned the tables once again in the hills. With Tamang community already rejoicing after announcement for a development board like the one Lepchas have, the Rai’s called off their relay hunger strike here on Thursday
The Khambu Rights Movement of the community pressing for its demand for a tribal status had started a relay hunger
strike before chief minister’s visit. “We met the chief minister at Mirik and submitted a memorandum. She has assured us that the state government will seriously forward the demand to the centre,” said Sandeep Kulung, the spokesperson of the committee.
The Morcha leadership however supporting the demand said it is now the duty of the government to take forward the issue to CRI and centre as soon as possible. “We support the demand of the Rai’s. Infact we support tribal status for all the Gorkha communities,” said Harka Bahadur Chettri, the Morcha Spokesperson
