GJMM STUDENT WING SUSPENDS MONTH-LONG RELAY HUNGER STRIKE

Following the request and assurance made by Darjeeling MP, Mr SS Ahluwalia on the present emergency situation and border tensions between India and Pakistan, the relay hunger strike by the youths and students under the banner of Gorkha Jan Mukti Vidyarthi Morcha (GJMVM), a frontal organization of Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) in all three hill subdivision was called off today after entering its 40th day.

The relay hunger strike was intended to press the demand of formation of a central level committee to review demand of Gorkhaland. However, GJMVM activists and GJMM leaders have maintained that the hunger strike has not been called off but suspended temporarily keeping in consideration the national security issues that has been surfacing and the MP’s assurance.

GJMYM had started a hunger strike seeking formation of a committee to review the demand of a separate statehood for Gorkhas. GJMVM in Darjeeling postponed their strike after the GJMM leadership decided to take in consideration the call of the MP. The lift off of relay hunger strike was informed by GJMM senior leader Mr Roshan Giri this morning.

Similarly,hunger strike at Kurseong Motor Stand was called off after entering its 38th day. GJMM leader from Kurseong, Mr Yogendra Rai, who is also the GTA Sabha member from Kurseong-Chimney Deorali Constituency handed glassful of juice to all the fasting GJMVM members and broke the fast this afternoon.

Addressing the media persons, Mr Rai said that keeping in mind the present emergency situation and border tensions with Pakistan, the Darjeeling MP SS Ahluwalia requested the GJMM party and its students wings leadership to withdraw their ongoing relay hunger.

“Further,Mr Ahluwalia had assured us that in the coming days the BJP led central government will look into their demands. Hence, considering all the points, GJMM and GJMVM decided to postpone the ongoing relay hunger strike from today,” he added.

In Kalimpong, the GJMVM hunger strike had entered is 40th day and was
similarly postponed upon the same lines as in other hill subdivision.
The GJMM leaders of Kalimpong has hinted that the party stands for the solidarity of the nation and following the tension between India and Pakistan, the party has decided to continue its movement after things gets back to normal.
