Gutka business thriving silently in Kalimpong
Mukesh sharma
Kalimpong, February 26:
Gutkas amounting up to thousands of rupees were set on fire by the Kalimpong Municipality along with the Gorkha Janmukti Vidyarthi Morcha, some years ago, in order to make Kalimpong a ‘Gutka free’ town. After the step taken, the selling of Gutkas at various Pan shops had come to a halt. However, after the check on Gutka selling was topped, gradually the Gutka business has once again set off in the town. Though the Gutkas are not being sold openly, the business is flourishing in a hushed manner. The Gutka packets lying all over the garbage place in the town proves that the use and sell of Gutkas have not at all stopped here. Recently, the Kalimpong Municipality has issued an order to stop using plastic bags. The people now demand, that the Municipality should also issue an order to ban the selling and buying of Gutkas. This way the business can be controlled, they opine. They also say that the local NGOs and the students’ organizations can also play a major role in curbing the same.
