Statue of journalist Lt. Nirmal Rai unveiled

On the 25th death anniversary of Late Nirmal Rai, the Kalimpong Press Club has set up his statue at the Press Club office premises. The statue was unveiled by Shanti Lama, 2 no. ward councilor today.
Late Rai was a journalist who was murdered on April 12, 1988 during the time of agitation in the hills. His head was found hanging in a net at Damber Chowk, Kalimpong early morning. Till date his murderers have not been traced. Late Rai who was associated with two vernacular dailies was 33 years old during the time of his death. The Siliguri Journalists Association had then carried out a rally protesting the ruthless crime.
Today’s function was held under the presidentship of BK Silal. Ward councilor, Zion Lepcha, KSA president, Urgen Lama, Late Rai’s family members and members of Kalimpong Press Club also attended the function.
