Kalimpong Lanes searching for sanity .

KNE Reports
Kalimpong,30th Dec
Cleanliness is next to godliness” does this old aged adage still hold true? Kalimpong Municipality chairman Late L.B Pariyar always said that people who keep their houses clean should also keep their surroundings clean. Various streets and roads coming under different wards of the Kalimpong Municipality can be seen filthy and unkempt nowadays. This situation is far more aggravated in many areas coming under the purview of ward no 2 especially where the mobility of municipal garbage van is not possible. People dump their garbage on the roads resulting in the blockage and overflowing of drains and gutters and thereby adding more woes to the chaotic situation. One of the main routes of Mani Link Road leading towards the C K Chowk is a plight to see. The same locality has a Town Post Office as well as many footpath stalls. These hawkers as well as the fruit sellers dump their garbage, sacks and cartons on the road there by creating issues for the daily commuters. The municipal sweepers when requested by the localities fail to cooperate and make excuses such as : the garbage being too heavy ,or the area not falling under their jurisdiction and at times also failing to work despite being paid in advance for the same. Moreover there isn’t a single dustbin or a dumping area in the locality which these hawkers can make use of and there by not making use of the roads for disposal Also it is seen that the lane adjacent to the Axis Bank is always very filthy and reeking with a semi-liquid putrefaction, puddles of greenish slime and water and hence out of bound for the commuters. They also face similar issues while walking through the various lanes of Main Road and road following to mortar stand and near the Kalimpong Police Station area because of the pouring water from buildings nearby. This is the peak season when the town expect a huge influx of tourists. Switzerland is a far reality as of now; the Kalimpong Municipality should look into this matter as soon as possible and help making Kalimpong a cleaner and a healthier place to live in.
