Kalimpong, Mar 23:

Dr. Mahendra P Lama former vice chancellor of Sikkim University and an independent candidate for the Darjeeling parliamentary seat looks to be much more a CPRM candidate after the latter pledged support to him instead of the GJM backed BJP. The CPRM Sunday formed a 14 member committee that will lead the election campaign in Kalimpong and its adjoining areas along with Kurseong sub division for Lama.
Taramani Rai, the CPRM general secretary today confirmed that Lama has been supported only after holding two rounds of meeting.“The hill people wanted a candidate who is the son of the soil. We do not want to go against the will of the people. Lama is an able candidate who is a resident of the hills. Moreover Lama has accepted many of the points laid by the party in front of him in a bid to achieve statehood,” said Rai.Lama reportedly has agreed to form a steering committee comprising of constitutional experts if he is voted for the seat. The committee is expected to look into the matters to be raised in the parliament. Lama will discuss his plans before going to the parliament with the committee. “If Lama’s voice goes unheard in the Parliament the he will resign from the post after which a mass movement would be carried out,” added Rai.

The CPRM will work in tandem along with the Darjeeling Dooars United Development Foundation (DDUDF)—a body floated by Lama himself. The DDUDF has members from all walks of life and from both the Dooars and Darjeeling area.
