In what seems likely an outburst after losing the
prestigious Darjeeling Parliamentary seat to the formidable BJP, the
TMC’s hill unit resorted to violence on Monday that left one GJM
supporter with a broken leg and other injuries while a The incident
occurred in this hamlet town of Mungpoo that falls under the Kurseong
sub-division days after S. S. Ahluwalia, the BJP candidate won the seat
defeating TMC’s iconic ex-footballer
Bhaichung Bhutia with a margin of more than one lakh votes that has
blown TMC by fire although it managed to win 34 seats out of 42 in
Bengal but with no say at the centre. The problems began this morning
around 9:30 when a maruti van that transported TMC supporters, allegedly
entered the GJM party office at Mungpoo while two of GJM supporters
were present. “We were sitting at the party office after opening it when
TMC gang virtually entered the office and attacked us with sharp
weapons. While trying to get away from the weapons I broke my leg,” said
Adeep Tamang. The other office bearer to suffer minor injury was Kewal
Thakuri. The TMC supporters also ransacked the GJM office. The GJM
supporters in reprisal immediately shut down shops, gathered in huge
numbers, rallied in the town and gheroad the Mungpoo outpost demanding
immediate arrest of the TMC supporters. Further, the angry supporters
blocked the road connecting to Siliguri and Darjeeling in which a
vehicle was torched. The GJM served an ultimatum to the police to arrest
accused by 6 o’clock this evening. The GJM also alleged cash of around 2
lakh has been missing from the office. Police however pacified the mob
to let open the road and said it has started to find the culprits. No
arrest had been made till the time of filing this news. The TMC on the
other hand alleged that their party flags were burnt by GJM supporters
Sunday evening after a massive rally of victory in the area. Roshan
Giri, the General Secretary of the GJM who also represents the area in
the GTA however denied that his party burnt the Trinamool flags. “This
is just a rumor the opposition is vying after it lost with a huge
margin,” he said. Darjeeling superintendent of Police Akhilesh
Chaturvedi confirmed the happening of the Sunday evening incident.
