Child labour busted in Kalimpong, 10 children rescued

KALIMPONG, June 06:
Ten
child labourers were recovered by the Kalimpong Sub Divisional Child Labour
Rescue and Rehabilitation Group during a search and rescue operation conducted
at various hotels, restaurants and other business establishments of the town.
Out of the ten children, seven were rescued from various hotels and
restaurants, two from a garage situated at 10 ½ Mile and one from a nursery
located at Atisa Road.
The
rescue team comprised of Assistant Labour Commissioner, TT Bhutia, Deputy
Magistrate, TN Sherpa, Ward Councilors, Ravi Pradhan and Muna Lama and the
members of the Bal Suraksha Abhiyan.
The
Sub Divisional Officer, LN Sherpa informing about the rescue team to the media
persons said that the particular team was formed with an aim to set free the
child labourers. The children rescued today are all under 14 years of age, he
notified. These children will now be kept in the Bal Suraksha Abhiyan Centre
for some time. He added that in the meantime the District Child Welfare
Committee will be informed about this case and further actions will be taken
according to the Committee’s direction. Likewise, Sherpa asserted that those
people from whom these children were recovered, they shall be penalized with a
fine of Rs 20, 000/- which they need to hand over to the Deputy Magistrate.
Further, a bank account will be opened in the respective children’s name and
the said amount will be deposited in their accounts. The Labour Department will
also deposit an amount of Rs 5000/- in these accounts.
Those
who will not be able to pay the fine, they shall be sentenced for a year under
the 2006 Act. In the coming days frequent raids will be conducted in houses,
shops, restaurants etc. said the Officer. “It is a crime to practice child
labour”, asserted Sherpa informing the general public.
