Come rain come sun, water crisis remains prevalent throughout

KALIMPONG, June 25:
Either
summers or winters, the water scarcity has proved to be an ill fate for the
residents of Kalimpong town. These residents are always in a hope that at least
during monsoons they won’t face any water shortage issues. But all their hopes
are shattered, for the monsoons instead of bringing some relief creates much
inconveniences for the pipelines are affected by the monsoon triggered
landslides.
After
2 days of slumber, the PHE was supposed to distribute water, which did not
happen. Speaking on this context the PHE Assistant Engineer, Anil Chettri
informed that the 10 inches PHE pipeline at Lava has been destroyed by the
landslide caused due to the continuous overnight downpour. Further, because of
this the Delo Reserve is running dry.
When
the PHE Executive Engineer and Neora Water Scheme Engineer were contacted
regarding this matter, they said that they stand helpless because even the
Reserve at Algarah which has the capacity to hold 13 million gallons of water
is running short of water. Only the hospitals are given water supply, they
added. Further, they notified that there is no proper water management in order
to provide enough water supplies.
During
the meeting held with the Disaster Management they had kept forward the need to
install polythene pipelines when the main or the big pipelines are damaged,
also regarding the same, they had estimated a cost of Rs 7 lakhs and submitted
it to the State Government. Even the copies of the estimation were submitted to
the Disaster Management, Sub Divisional Officer and PHE Department, Darjeeling.
But this amount has not been sanctioned yet.
