Monsoon, accidents and the Rescuers along the Teesta River

The
adventure sport, White River Rafting which almost carries out for eight months comes
to an end following the monsoon season in Teesta River due to the enormous rise
in the water level. The administration had put a ban on rafting during the
season to avoid any unseen incidents. It was in the monsoon season when a
rescuer team met an accident in Teesta River where three of them died and the
administration was forced to shut down rafting for long time.
But
on the other hand whenever an accident occurs along the NH31A, it is those
rescuers who bet their life in saving the victims, who knows the river from
near. One of the rescuer said that as of now they have carried out 6 rescued operations
which basically were of accidents along the NH31A but after the prohibition by
the administration they have become a mere spectator. He also added that Gopal
Chettri (laborer) who was droned few days back could have been saved if the
prohibition was lifted.
On one hand the rescuers have been putting
their life at stake for saving lives on humanitarian consideration; on the
other hand the administration has been strong in its stand claiming not to risk
more lives taking into consideration the monsoon.
