Teesta residents appeal NHPC for a stronger protection wall
MUKESH SHARMA
TEESTA,
June 15:
The Teesta Bazaar
alongside the River Teesta is situated 16 kms from Kalimpong town. The Teesta
Bazaar stretch over a km has always been in danger by the flow of the river.
The horrendous Teesta flood in the year 1968 not only inculcates fear in the
minds of the Teesta residents but also to the Kalimpong residents. Due to the
river current, inches of land is being by the river day by day. Danger perils
at Teesta Bazaar which is situated between two massive hydro power projects.
The NHPC had earlier built a protective wall but was washed away eventually by
the continuous rainfall. Taking the monsoon and the above circumstances into
consideration, the residents now has requested the NHPC to construct a strong
protective wall measuring at least about 3 mtrs. Reciprocating to the appeal
the NHPC officials recently visited the spot and have also assured the residents
for the construction of a strong protective wall.
