Town’s commercial establishments raided, 19 household gas cylinders seized

Soon
after the raid on child labour, the Kalimpong Administration along with
Kalimpong Municipality, Police Department and Fire Brigade today conducted
raids at the town’s Super Market, Main Road, Motor Stand, DS Gurung Road,
hotels, restaurants and sweet shops of Ongden Road, star rated hotels of the
town etc. It may be recalled that a meeting was held at the office of the Sub
Divisional Officer on May 18, 2012 during which they had issued a notice for
all the commercial establishments to get a proper commercial gas connection by
May 31. This imperative meeting was held between the Sub Divisional Officer, LN
Sherpa, Municipality, MLA, Fire Officer and officials of IOCL, reciprocating to
the complaints from the locals of gas cylinder shortage and distribution of gas
once in 3 months plus illegal gas connection business.
During
the search operation conducted under the guidance of the Deputy Magistrate, TN
Sherpa and Diki Bhutia, 19 household gas cylinders were seized from 13
different commercial establishments. The household gases were not only
recovered from small hotels and restaurants but even from the town’s top
hotels. The search operation which lasted almost for 2 hours has been regarded
successful.
The
Deputy Magistrate notified that use of household gases in commercial
establishments is a crime against the law. The seized gas cylinders are handed
over to the Municipality. These kinds of raids will frequently be conducted, he
added. The Municipality License Officer, Sahil Ahmed informed that those
commercial establishments from where the household gas cylinders were recovered
will be sent a notice by the Municipality and they too shall be penalized.
