Venture Capital Scheme to be introduced in the hills

For
the 1st time in Darjeeling, Venture Capital Scheme is being
introduced. Though the said Scheme was initiated in the year 2005 by the
Government of India (GOI), however the farmers of the Darjeeling hills were not
able make use of the same. The Kalimpong Krishak Kalyan Sangathan (KKS) have
been demanding the initiation of the Scheme which is also called DEDS in the
hills since long. Hence, the KKS’s demand has been fulfilled as a notice for
starting the Scheme in the hills has been now finally passed by the Ministry of
Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries.
According
to the KKS Chief Secretray, Vishnu Chettri, the farmers who produce milk will
be benefitting the most through DEDS. 9 more Schemes fall under this DEDS which
includes rearing of cows, rearing of calf, vermin compost, block cooler,
establishment of processing machines, vehicles for milk delivery cold storage
etc. he added. Until now the farmers of the hills could not benefit from the
said Scheme due to Himul which comes under the White Float Scheme. The DEDS
will prove to be beneficial to all the farmers of the hills, asserted Chettri.
Further, he acquainted that in the Darjeeling hills, 91% farmers are there and
they carry out dairy farming too as they cannot be fully dependent only on
agriculture. Under this Scheme, 33% subsidiary is for the SC and whereas for
the general its 25%. Also under DEDS n amount of Rs 4 lakhs 80 thousand is also
granted to the farmers who are into dairy farming. A block cooling can be made
which holds the capacity to cool 1000 ltrs of milk. The Scheme also provides
various kinds of loans to the farmers such as, 12 lakhs for the dairy
processing, 24 lakhs for transportation, 30 lakhs for cold storage, 2 lakhs 40
thousand for Veterinary Clinic and up to 56 thousand for dairy parlour.
