Dara, July 5
The NH31A
came to halt for almost 10 hours when a major landslide triggered at the 21
Mile Birik Dara today morning cutting off Kalimpong and Sikkim from the rest of
the country.
The scale
of the mud slide was so alarming and the experts are of the belief that the
torrential rainfall and the jolt of the 18 September earthquake had culminated
the landslide. Vehicles in the stretch of 8 kilometers in both the sides were
stranded due to the blockade.
Some of
the vehicles went through the alternative route via Jorebanglow which takes
additional 8 hours to reach Siliguri. Similarly after the information of the
blockade many vehicles from Kalimpong went through Gorubathan along the Dooars
route to reach Siliguri.
It is
reported that one way traffic was restored after 8 hours of effort done by the
GREF personnel.
The areas
like the Teesta, Likhubhir, 29 Mile, Rambi, Sevoke are prone to
landslides. Birik Dara which troubled the travelers in the last monsoon
has upset this year too.
