NHPC
Limited, formerly known as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd. was
established in 1975.NHPC is a Mini Ratna Category-I Enterprise of the
Government of India. With an authorized share capital of `15,000 Crore, NHPC is ranked
as a premier organization in the country for development of hydropower. The
Company successfully concluded its Initial Public Offer (IPO) worth over Rs.
6,000 crore and became listed company on NSE & BSE with effect from 1st
September, 2009.
NHPC
is a multi-disciplinary organization and has acquired sufficient expertise and
state-of-the-art technology for investigation, planning, designing and
executing both large and small size hydropower projects. It has the strength of
highly qualified and experienced professionals in Design and Engineering, Geo-technical
Engineering, Construction Planning and ConstructionManagement for building
hydroelectric projects.
So
far, NHPC has completed 20 Power Stations with a total installed capacity of 6507
MW which includes1520 MW through NHDC Limited – a Joint Venture of NHPC with
Government of Madhya Pradesh. At present 4 projects with a total installed
capacity of 3290 MW are under execution. In addition, the Company has 5
projects of 5115 MW capacity under various stages of approval. The Power
Stations/ Projects of NHPC are located in the States of J&K, Himachal
Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Assam
NHPC
has very strong presence in North Bengal and Sikkim since last more than 25
years for the development of hydropower projects in these areas. In Sikkim,two
Power Stations Rangit Power Station(60 MW) and Teesta Stage-V Power Station
(510 MW) have been already commissioned by NHPC and these Power Stations are
contributinghuge revenue to the Government of Sikkim. Also NHPC ispoised to commence
the construction of Teesta Stage-IV HE Project near Mangan Town of Sikkim very shortly.
As far as North Bengal is concerned NHPC has already commissioned TLD-III Power
Station (132 MW) situated near Rambi, District Darjeeling in 2013 and TLDP-IV
HE Project (160 MW), Kalijhora is under advanced stage of completion and is
likely to be completed in 2015.
NHPC
by virtue of commissioning these hydropower projects has gained specific insight
into the construction, operation and maintenance of the hydropower projects in
the Teesta Basin, especially in terms of high volume of flow round the year,
high flood discharge, silt content, synchronization of operation of Power
Stations etc.
NHPC
has varied experiences in managing and mitigating environmental aspects of hydro power development and is committed to the local area development through
statutory as well as CSR schemes. NHPC has also committed 40
crore for construction of infrastructure for an Engineering College at Takdah in
Darjeeling District and 1stinstallment of Rs. 8 crore has been already
released to District Administration/ GTA. NHPC is always concerned and
sensitive to the welfare of project affected people and compensation are extended
to them in an expeditious manner as per the directives of State Authorities.
It
is heartening to note that State Cabinet of West Bengal Government has decided
to allot 4 more hydro power projects with total capacity of 293 MW to NHPC for
their development in the Darjeeling District. These projects are 84 MW Teesta
Intermediate H.E. Project, 81MW Teesta Low Dam I & II H.E. Project, 48 MW Rammam
H.E. Project Stage-I and 80 MW Teesta Low Dam-V H.E. Project
In a
meeting held today at Kalimpong, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms.
Mamata Banerjee appreciated the work done by NHPC for their efforts made so far
in the development of Hydro Power Projects in the State of West Bengal. She
urged NHPC to complete the projects assigned to them in time and assured full help
and cooperation. Also present in the meeting were Shri J.K. Sharma, Director
(Projects), NHPC, Shri S.R. Roy, Executive Director, Region Siliguri, Shri Ravi
Shankar, General Manager, TLDP-IV Project and other senior officers of NHPC.
Speaking
to the Media, Shri J.K. Sharma, Director (Projects) NHPC expressed his gratitude
to the Govt. of West Bengal and WBSEDCL for reposing faith on them. He assured
that NHPC will strive very hard for the development of
these projects after obtaining necessary clearances such as Environment,
Forests, Investment clearance etc. from Government of India and State Govt.
Authorities. He hoped that with the development of these hydropower projects
the power scenario of North Bengal in particular and West Bengal in general
will improve immensely ushering in a new era of economic development in the
area.
