Kalimpong,17th June
Kiwi, a berry type of fruit is successfully
introduced at Dalapchand farm by Darjeeling Krishi Vigyan Kendra which operates
under Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalimpong sub-division of Darjeeling
hills. M.W. Moktan, head of the kendra informed “that the altitude of the farm area is
about 3000 feet MSL The planting materials have been brought from Dirang,
Arunachal Pradesh in the year 2014. The varieties are Alison, Haward, Monte and
Bruno. He added despite normally the kiwi plant starts to bear after 3rd
year of planting but plant starts to bear after 2nd year of planting
in this region .
Kiwi plantation
started for the first time in 2014 on an experimental basis appears to have
borne fruit as farms are laden with the oval-shaped edible berries.
The crop is still under experimental observation and
after maturity of the fruit; the analysis will be done in laboratory for its
quality parameters. If the analysis result will be positive then the Kendra
will take up bigger initiative to make the farmers aware about the crop and
distribute the planting material in future for larger expansion of this high
value crop in this region added Moktan
This crop
will definitely gives a high remuneration to the farmers of Darjeeling
hills. This fruit has good market
potential and has a market value of about Rs.400
- 600 per kg (at Siliguri market) as we want to promote kiwi as an
alternative commercial crop in the hills .
Recently a field day programme on Kiwi Fruits was
conducted on where with more than 50 interested farmers from the different
corners of the Kalimpong sub- division took part . Farmers were given knowledge
on its package and practices.

If kiwi fruit has been successfully cultivated in Kalimpong, it could indicate that the climate and soil conditions are conducive to its growth. Successful cultivation of non-native crops often involves careful research, adaptation to local conditions, and proper agricultural practices. This could potentially provide the local community with a new source of income and contribute to agricultural diversity.
