After winning the Kalimpong College Union election, the Jan Andolan students’ union has raised the issue of absence of a permanent assistant professor for Mathematics department in Kalimpong College.
Jan Andolan students’ union have sent a memorandum to Vikash Kumar, IAS, principal secretary of higher education,demanding action in the matter.
Manish Khaling, the general secretary of Kalimpong College students’union said, “Kalimpong College is a premier high education institution in the sub division of Kalimpong, which from April 2017 will become a district.The college has a large number of departments but the lack of a permanent professor,especially in Science department is causing great problems to career of those who wish to study Mathematics.”
He said most of the departments in Science are under staffed, especially Maths and Physics.
Khaling said that in the Maths department, there is only one part time professor. If the professor gets another job and leaves the college, the department in the college will be closed just due to lack of professors.
He said he has urged the principal secretary to fill the posts for different general departments and urgently sanction a professor for the Mathematics department for the new session which starts on first week of February.
From 1993, Kalimpong college have had two sanctioned post (General and Reserved) for both Maths and Physics departments. Physics department has one permanent assistant professor where as the reserved post is empty.
There is no permanent assistant professor in both categories for Mathematics department.
For the past many years, there were two part time professors, out of which last year one got a permanent job and left.Now the department relies upon the sole part timer.
When asked about the issue, Kalimpong College principal Dr R P Dhakal said despite advertisement for both the posts, no applicants have applied yet.
He said permanent assistant professors are sent through College Service Commission and he can just bring part timers.He expects
a new professor may come and join soon.
