Protest rally in the hills against price hike
MUKESH SHARMA
Kalimpong,September 20:
The rally had the participation of the GTA Deputy
Chief Col Ramesh Alley, Naari Morcha leader Asha Gurung, Prakash Gurung,
Darjeeling Terai- Dooars Plantation Labour Union President PT Sherpa, Janmukti
Ashthayi Karmachari Sanghatan Spokesperson Deepak Sharma and all the GJM
frontal organisations.
Asha Gurung in her address said that the hike in the
prices of the commodities has hampered the poor. The recent price hike is a
direct blow to the aspirations of the poor, she added. The declaration of only
six cylinders annually to a family is explicit, she said and insisted that
instead of six, twelve has to be provided.
Col. Ramesh Alley stressed that the price hike poses
serious threat to the lives of the poor. Apart from it, he said that the GTA
should be incorporated in the North East Council and every facility under the
Council should be given to them.
Likewise, in Kalimpong too, the GJM and the Municipal
Councilors today met the Kalimpong Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) LN Sherpa. They
were also assisted by the GJM frontal organizations. The protesters submitted a
memorandum to the SDO with reference to pull back the diesel price hike by the
Central Government and the distribution of only six cylinders annually.
GTA Councilor Samuel Gurung said that only six
cylinders to a family in a year would in turn affect the forest in the Hills.
On the other hand, the Forest Department do not permit cutting of trees for
domestic purposes, which will further harden the life of the people. This will
pave way for black market, said Gurung.
Earlier a rally was also organized by the GJM starting
from Damber Chowk, which encircled the town and ended at the Sub Divisional
Office.
