Emu Farming introduced at Suruk GP
MUKESH SHARMA
KALIMPONG, June 13:
The
President of the SHG, Bhim Bhujel informed that there is much demand of Emu
birds all around the world. The flesh, skin, excreta, feathers etc. of Emu all
come into use. He also informed that during the month of March, the
representatives from the Drishti Optimex Company, Bankura had come to Kalimpong
in order to train them about Emu Farming. They were informed during the
training that Emu’s flesh/ meat are on high demand in 5 Star hotels. It costs
Rs 800- 1000 per egg. The skin and the feathers are also made into use. The fat
of this particular bird are converted into oil for medicinal use which is sold
at Rs 4000 per litre in the market.
Further,
he added that it is hard for standard farmers to take up Emu Farming because
the market value of Emu chicks is high. Hence, taking this expense under
consideration, the Government also provides loan to the SHGs who take up Emu
Farming. The Emu chicks brought at Suruk are just 6 months old. Within 3 years
the weight of Emu goes up to 40- 45 kgs. During 1st year the Emu
lays 10- 12 eggs followed by 20- 25 during the 2nd and 30- 35 during
the 3rd. Therefore, Emu Farming can be taken up as a proper business
medium, said Bhujel. It becomes costly to bring Emu chicks all the way from
Bankura, hence in the future the SHG be setting up a Hazing Plant so that Emu
chicks can be born and raised in Suruk itself.
