MUKESH SHARMA
KALIMPONG, June 14:
A
Maxx vehicle bearing No- SK 04/ J 0452 plunged 300 ft below into River Teesta
in the midnight hours between 12- 1 a.m. in which death of 7 lives are being
suspected. The vehicle was ferrying towards Gangtok from Kitam in order to
fetch the dead body of one of the passenger’s mother from STNM Hospital,
Gangtok. But during the journey, the fateful vehicle with 8 passengers in it
skidded off the road at Mam Khola area situated along National Highway (NH) 31A
under Kalimpong Sub Division.
According
to the information received, out of the 8, only 1 passenger named Kiran Subba managed
to survive by jumping out of the vehicle. The other passengers were Durga Mani
Pradhan (owner cum driver of the vehicle), Mohan Subba, Sajal Subba, Bikash
Subba, Umesh Subba, Amardeep Subba and Subash Subba. Kiran though severely
injured cried for help but all in vain. However, he managed to reach Kirney by
foot seeking for help. The Kirney residents then informed his family members
and admitted him to the Melli Primary Health Centre (PHC) for immediate medical
aid, after which he was then referred to North Bengal Medical College and
Hospital for further treatment. It has been informed that Subba’s condition is
still critical.
Due
to the monsoons the water level of Teesta has increased, hence rest of the 7
passengers is feared to have been swept away by the rapid Teesta waves. People
have reported seeing the vehicle’s chassis floating at Kirney, 4 kms away from
the accident spot. Only after seeing the remaining part of the vehicle, it can
be made out how severe was the accident. The heavy rainfall overnight is said
to the main cause of the accident.
Under
the auspices of the Melli Police Post In charge, NC Burman a search operation
has been initiated today morning by the Police search team accompanied by the
team lead by Sikkim Police Inspector, Bijay Subba and Teesta Rafting Rescue
Group. The search operation is being conducted from the accident spot until
