GJM still a strong contender for the GTA election
MUKESH SHARMA
Kalimpong,
June 29
The
GJM President Bimal Gurung statement on Thursday which said if GJM contests the
GTA election, it shall be victorious in all 45 seats sounds to be reasonable
looking behind the past.
The
GJM was the party which brought down the 21 years of regime of the GNLF in the
Hills. The amount of support that the party accomplished simultaneously with
the demand of Gorkhaland, the BJP MP to Lok Sabha Jaswant Singh in 2009 also
got victorious with a massive margin of 2.53 lacs from the Hills backed by the
GJM.
Similarly
in the State Assembly election in 2011, all the three MLAs of the Hills marked
their triumph with more than 1 lacs of margin. Likewise in the Kalachani, independent
candidate Wilson Champamari, in Siliguri and the Matigara State Assembly seats
the GJM successfully ended the CPM rule joining hands with the Trinamool
Congress. The uncontested win in all the four muncipality is also is a great example.
CPIM and the Trinamool have showed green signal for their participation in the
election and rest will be known soon.
Kalimpong has the strength of 169663 voters
along with 227 polling booths. GJM candidate from Kalimpong Dr Harka Bahadur
Chettri fetched 109102 to that of GNLF 7427 votes in the previous State
Assemblies election. Though there have been several other political parties in
the Hills but the GJM has been successful in sweeping the elections. In the
other hand the CPRM can be a tuff competitor for the GJM this time.
