Tiff between the Chamber of Commerce and the business group regarding shutting down of shops
MUKESH SHARMA
KALIMPONG, June 03:
Much
indifference can be seen between the Kalimpong Chamber of Commerce and the
business group regarding the decision of shutting down the shops on Thursdays
and Sundays. 90% of the businessmen/ shopkeepers are in favour of shutting down
the shops on Sundays and the rest 10% are opting for Thursdays.
Speaking
on this regard, the Chamber of Commerce President, Narendra Somani said that
they do not hold any authority to direct the people forcefully to close the shops;
instead it is the work of the Government Department. During the peak tourist
season the shops are open every day from April 15- June 15, he mentioned.
Though
the 2 years tenure of the Executive body of the Chamber is over still the
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) being busy over the Gorkha Territorial
Administration (GTA) elections have directed them to continue with the same
body until the elections, he acquainted.
Further,
stating that there is not unity among the businessmen/ shopkeepers Somani
asserted that they (businessmen/ shopkeepers) need to develop their mentality.
Those who are in favour of shutting down the shops on Sundays, they themselves
are sitting with their shops open today, he concluded.
