Sawan Months observed in Hills
MUKESH SHARMA
KALIMPONG
July 16:
The Sawan month is of great importance out
of the twelve months according to the Hindu calendar. The surroundings can be
seen full of greenery during this month. It seems as if a new life has been
gives to nature. A close relationship between humans and nature has been
described in the Vedas. According to Vedas, Brahmanas offer prayers and read
Vedas during rains. Doing this, makes a person feel happy and content. The
Sawan month is full of days with rains. Various insects and other beings come
out of the dark during rains and make noises. It seems as if someone has broken
the vow of silence and has started speaking again.
The second Monday of Sawan month today witnessed
multitudes of devotees at the Mahakal Dham offering water at the Shiva Linga in
Darjeeling. The heavy rainfall since last three days could not pamper the
devotion of the people.
Likewise in Kalimpong the similar scenario
was observed. Every temple in and around Kalimpong town like Thakurbari,
Inchey, Bermiok Dham were flocked by the devotees to offer water to Lord Shiva.
The puja is also started at the Rambi temple.
It is said that a person should worship
Lord in the following four months just like various insects and other beings
start making noises during the Sawan month. According to mythology, nature is a
form of Lord Shiva and hence, Lord Shiva is worshipped during the Sawan month.
There is a lot of rain during the Swan month and the level of water increases.
Hence, water is poured on Lord Shiva during this month.
According to religious texts, poison came
out of the sea during the battle between the Devas and the Demons. Lord Shiva
came forward and drank this poison to save mankind. Lord Shiva did this during
the Sawan month. His body temperature increased substantially. All Devi-Devas
tried to lower his body temperature but nothing helped. Lord Shiva then wore
the Moon on his head which lowered his temperature.
It is also believed that Lord Indra wanted
Lord Shiva’s body temperature to decreases and hence, it rained heavily. This
calmed down Lord Shiva and since then the Sawan month is celebrated to please
Lord Shiva. Water is poured on Lord Shiva during the whole Sawan month,
especially on Mondays. Lord Shiva is worshipped with a lot of zeal during this
month which is the second biggest event after Mahashivaratri.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is
worshipped during the whole Sawan month. This month is known as Bholenath’s
month. There is a legend behind this. According to this legend, Sati sacrificed
her life in her father, Daksh’s house. Before doing this, she swore that she
would marry Lord Shiva in every succeeding life.
Devi Sati was born as Parvati in the next
life. She was the daughter of Himalaya and Maina. In this life, Parvati fasted
during the month of Sawan when she was young. Lord Shiva was impressed and
since then, fasting during the Sawan month has a great value.
