No sports are low-graded until and unless if you are dedicated and the different organizations and the administration is backing you. There is no dearth of chess players in Kalimpong but it is the tournament that is lacking which has blackout the emerging talents.

Veteran and renowned chess player Surendra Subba has now hoped that the scenario in the Hills will change as the newly formed Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) has been providing platforms to various games.

 Subba during his young days worked in Nepal. It was in Nepal that he learnt the game through his friends. He in his name has won already the Kakarivitta chess championship, Mechi open chess championship, Lt Pushpa Lall inter municipality championship.

The Hills was so dry in terms of the tournaments being organized said Subba. He had stood third in the Late Phul Chandra memorial tournament in the year 2008 which was organized by the Darjeeling chess association. Likewise, he secured the 2nd and the 3rd place in the chess tournament that was organized by the SDF Bhawan Trust at Gangtok, in the year 2012 and 2011 respectively.  In the Mandira Sharma Dahal open chess challenge competition organized by the Lali Guras Club in this year, he stood the champion.

He remembered that during the regime of the DGHC in the Hills in the year 1997-2000, the Gorkha Hill Council Federation used to conduct the chess tournament which was affiliated to the Indian Chess Federation but it also faded away due to some technical problems. 

After the formation of the GTA various other games and sports in the Hills got a pushing back, Subba has also hoped for the same for his game. 

There is no distinction in the game; even the old to the young ones, the women can play the game held Subba.
