Issue of Gorkhas being labeled as ‘foreigners’ highlighted in Mumbai Marathon

Kalimpong, January 28:
Total 17 runners from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and Sikkim did well in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon held at Mumbai on January 20, 2013. During the marathon, Roshni Rai, an international runner from Pedong under the ‘Run with Roshni’ project carried forward the issue of Gorkhas being labeled as ‘foreigners’ in the country. With a logo on the jersey reading, ‘We are Gorkhas and we are proud to be Indians’, 3 runners of the hills completed the 42 km full marathon. Other participants from different countries completed the 21 kms half marathon.
Prabal Chettri, from Kalimpong secured 12th position in the half marathon under the Indian category.
Mala Sherpa, member of the Himalayan Marathon Runner Association, who also partook in the event, has thanked all those who supported them. She has especially thanked her coach, friends and GTA deputy chief Col Ramesh Allay. All the participants also received certificates from the Navi Mumbai Rotary Club.
