Pyres at Labarbotey swept by Legship’s NHPC dam water
Mukesh Sharma
Kalimpong, January 04:
The water released from the dam situated at
Legship, West Sikkim has been creating nuisance in Kalimpong. Only few days ago
it was reported that the released water from the said dam washed away a burning
pyre at Labarbotey, Kalimpong’s cremation ground. In one hand the incident has
depicted lack of coordination between the administrations of both the states,
i.e. of Sikkim and West Bengal, while in the other it has upset the religious
and cultural sentiments of the Hindu population. Such happenings are not new to
the Kalimpong residents. Many such pyres have been swept away by the water
released from the NHPC’s dam at Legship. The locals say that the water is
released without any prior intimation. But the concerned authorities have not
learnt any lessons through such repeated incidents.
As per the Communist Party of Marxist (India)
(CPM) leader, Tara Sundas, minimum of 8-9 pyres have been swept by the water
earlier before the recent incident was highlighted. Expressing sadness over the
incident, Sundas has commented that it has disturbed the Hindu people at large.
He mentioned that earlier when such incidents were reported he had forwarded
letters to the District Collector, Namchi, Sikkim, NHPC officials and
Darjeeling District Collector demanding strong steps. He claimed that the NHPC
initiated steps after the DC, Namchi received the letter.
“After we demanded proper steps against this
issue the NHPC had started to alert through a siren before releasing the water.
Before the water was released from the Legship dam, Melli Thana used to be
informed and further the siren was put on”, said Sundas.
However, now the routine is discontinued.
The CPM leader recommended that keeping in mind
the Hindu funeral timings which mainly falls between 12pm- 1pm, the dam should
not be opened within this time frame.
“Taking the recent incident we will again be
meeting the officials of the concerned areas of Sikkim and the NHPC officials
and will demand a proper and final solution”, told Sundas.
The Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxist
(CPRM) Kalimpong Regional Committee has also expressed sadness over the issue.
Kishore Pradhan, the committee’s President said that this situation is mainly
due to the lack of coordination between the administrations of both the states.
Adding up all the incidents at Labarbotey, Pradhan said that the Kalimpong Sub
Divisional Officer should be met immediately and solution should be sought.
“NHPC has ventured here for their business. They
do not have any feelings towards people’s religious and cultural sentiments.
Also the civil administrations of both the states are answerable in this
situation. Why the administrations are asleep?” questioned Pradhan.
Lastly, he demanded that the District
administrations of Darjeeling and Sikkim should hold a meeting and find the
core solution to this issue.
