Stringent laws for crime against women, insists Dr Chettri

Kalimpong, January 05:

“Stricter laws should be made for crime against women which should be properly implemented”, said the Kalimpong MLA, Dr Harka Bahadur Chettri on Saturday speaking on the increasing numbers of crimes committed on women. He said that the government can do nothing about this issue, only rigid laws will help. Laws are there against such crimes but they are not well implemented, said the MLA and added that immediate decisions need to be made, at least within a week, and the culprits should be delivered strong punishment.
“Why the Delhi rape case is being lengthened when all the facts are laid in front?” questioned Dr Chettri exampling an example in the delay in imparting justice to the victim.
Apart from stringent laws, the most important is the change of mindset in the people. People with negative outlook are present everywhere, he told. For a positive mindset to be born within a person, he/she should be delivered proper moral values since their childhood. Morality should come right from the grass root level, he added.
He also alleged the Centre and other opposition parties of doing politics over the issue.
Further, he questioned that despite of putting a complete ban on tainted glasses why was the vehicle in which the girl was gang raped had tainted glasses? What were the Police doing when the vehicle was travelling all around the capital? All of them needs to be dismissed said the MLA.
Likewise, Dr Chettri also added that if the culprits were ministers’ or big shots’ son then they would have been free till now. “This is where our laws fall weak”, he said and added that the civil society needs strongly to step forward and pressurize the government and the system.
