Kalimpong December 16, 2014:
Kalimpong Krishak Kalyan Sangathan organized ‘Siri
festival’ for five days in Pankhasari (Gorubathan, Block-3) from 7th -11th December 2014. Designators like Ismail Mangrati-District
Vet nary Office DEO/PBGSS Darjeeling, Dr. D.K Sadana-Principal
Scientist ICAR/NBAGR, Karnal and Dr D. Naik- Scientist in Charge IARI,
RS, Kalimpong, were present in the inaugural ceremony.
More
than 100 Siri cattle farmers attended the festival where indigenous
Siri breed is the major cattle resource in the hills, informed the
general secretary of KKKS Bishnu Chettri. He said that the only
registered species of cattle found in Darjeeling area is SIRI which is
well adapted to the local conditions and the mean daily milk yield
performance observed from the sample of 5 Siri cows was 2.5+0.11 liters,
estimated from a population at various lactation stages which can
represent the daily milk yield in the cow.
Siri,
similar to other indigenous cattle in the country also have valuable
adaptive features and have the capacity to contribute effectively to the
humans through the consumption of nutrition, better organic farming,
and the improvements of the soil and environment.
In
a press conference the general secretary of KKKS expressed his
disappointment regarding the decreasing number of the species, ‘the
indigenous Siri breed is in a verge of extinction and there is no sign
of attention to prevent the endangerment of the cattle’ said Chettri.
According to the last census (of 2011) it was known that only 1400 Siri
breed are left in the Himalayan range.
It
was also known that milk are of two qualities A1 and A2, the problems
associated with A1 quality is harsh and can lead to many diseases like
Diabetes, Ischemic Heart Disease, Arteriosclerosis, Autism/Schizophrenia
and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome which are absent in Siri cow and the
milk belongs to A2 category which is rich in CLA (Conjugated Linoleic acid) an anti-oxidant, and has anti-cancer properties. The dung and urine of
the cattle also has a quality of useful bacteria which is more
effective than the dung of other species. The urine from the cattle can
be used as a bio-pesticide and has positive impact on plant growth,
explained KKKS.
However
the KKKS are trying to include the registered breed of the cattle in
the national policy, where not including is a result of the endangerment
of the species today. Chettri said that the motive of the 5 days
festival in Pankhasari was to create awareness about the importance of
the cattle and to include Siri in the national policy.
