Kalimpong December 11, 2014:
In order to mark the 22nd
year when India ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of
the Child (UNCRC) in 1992, Bal Suraksha Abhiyan organized a
walkathon-walk along for child rights in Algarah Public Ground today.
Algarah high school, Algarah primary school, St. Mary’s and other
students from children’s club participated in the walk for rights.
The walkathon started from two different routs i.e. from 18th
Mile to Algarah public ground and from Pedong till the public ground
carrying different banners with the mantra of Right to protection, Right
to participation, Right to development and Right to survival-the four
categories covers all civil, political, economical and cultural rights
of every child.
Around
250 children along with the public of few communities marched towards
the ground to create awareness of the cause in solidarity for Rights of
children. However Pedong’s Brigadier threw light on the rights of
children, he said ‘every child should be given their entitlements and
freedom without curtailing the limitations.’ He also assured to serve
the public anytime in need, ‘If anyone feels that Army’s can assist the
public in any social causes please let us know, we are ready to help
everyone’ he added.
The
purpose of the event was to mark the Silver Jubilee of the United
Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the
International level and 22nd year in India as a signatory
country, it is believed that today the conventions has been ratified by
192 countries where the convention puts genuine emphasis on the ‘need to
protect children’s right as early as possible in their lives.’
However
Sister Subeshna Thapa, the director of BSA said that many rights have
been established in India in the last 22 years, but without a practical
implementation of any right, a child will never be free from the
circumference of inequitableness. Adding to that she said Governments
should do many things to preserve the rights of Children, ‘Making law is
not going to reduce the problem which children are facing today.’ said
Thapa.
