One Ongdup Tamang, 27 from Sinji Sukrobaray near Teesta was handed over to the police by residents for attempting rape to a minor of 8 years yesterday.

Tamang used to stay in the victim’s house since last five years and works as a driver.

According to the information received from a source, Tamang reached home yesterday around 9 pm. The parents of the girl were looking after the new born piglet in the sty few yards away from their house. Sensing opportunity Tamang tried to molest and rape the girl.

The victim on finding the situation difficult screamed and the neighbours immediately reached the room to rescue the girl. Tamang quickly escaped from the window but the neighbours chased him, caught hold of Tamang and handed over to the police. He was produced in the court today and is booked under POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offense).
