The Sub Divisional Legal Services committee Kalimpong organized a legal awareness camp in Ram Lal Dahal High school, Upper Echhey where the Additional District and Session Judge- Utpal Mishra threw light on the subject of legal aids.

Addressing the people present in the school hall, the Judge Utpal Mishra enlightened everyone with the free legal aid, where he mentioned that the decisive factor for the abet are the women, children, handicapped, labors, victims of natural calamities, whose family income is lesser than 1 lack per annum and even the convicts.

‘Everyone including the convicts has the right to hire a lawyer and anyone has the right to come to the court for a free trial’ said Mishra believing that everyone is not a real criminal and they should not be curtailed from their rights.

It was known that for any circumstances, the aforementioned people (women, children, handicapped, labors, victims of natural calamities etc) can get a free lawyer to defend them whose charge will be remunerated by the legal service committee.

Educating people on other legal subjects it was discerned that time doesn’t matter to file a complaint in the police station, ‘irrespective to the situation or time a police can’t deny your complaint and he can’t say that you are late to lodge a complaint, in such cases the police will be imprisoned for six months and he will be terminated from his job’ said the Judge adding that a woman can’t be arrested before and after the sunset, even by the lady constables.

Similarly, knowledge of uninformed things were discussed in the program like a woman can’t be called to the police station to give any statements, a person stalking a girl and taking her pictures can be punished for 7 years of imprisonment, polygamy along with adultery is an offense, etc.

However, the addressees as well as the Principal of the school appreciated the colloquium which they termed as a much required program.
