Kalimpong, 3 August
The Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) commemorated the third death anniversary of Mangal Singh Rajput who died a ‘martyr’s death’ in the revived statehood agitation after committing self immolation on 30 July in the year 2013.
Rajput who had succumbed to his burn injuries on 3 August was the first person to commit self immolation in the century old history of the movement for separate state. The GJMM
Youth Wing today organized a homage ceremony at the 34 Number, Homes and Bhalukhop constituency dispensary area where a ‘shaheed bedi’ has been set up in the name of Rajput. A similar ceremony was organized at Dambar Chowk, the very spot where Rajput had set himself on fire while shouting “We want Gorkhaland”.
Different wings of the GJMM, councillors, Kalimpong MLA Sarita Rai and students from different schools gathered to pay homage to Rajput. The tribute was followed by a meeting that was organized at Trikon Park where youth representatives from Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik and adjoining areas participated.
Organizational secretary of central committee,Mr Bijay Sundas addressed the gathering and recounted Rajputh’s contribution and sacrifice demanding a separate state. “The self immolation of late Rajput did take the agitation to another level but his soul will only rest in peace if Gorkhaland is formed,” he added.
On the other hand, GJMM Youth wing Kalimpong president Mr Barud Thapa alleged the state government of creating a rift between sections of Gorkha community in hills by forming separate boards for respective communities.
Maintaining that the youths from Kalimpong are ready for the next phase of agitation, he said that the GJMM youths are waiting for a green signal from the party president Bimal Gurung
