KALIMPONG,
May 14:
It may be called either
the ill fate of the hills and the State or good fate of the neighbouring
Sikkim, that the internationally acclaimed Taekwondo Champ, Trilok Subba despite
of being born in Kalimpong is providing his services as the State Coach to the
Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association (SATA).

A player, a coach and a
referee Trilok, though being born to father PL Subba and mother Renulina Subba,
both former MLAs of Kalimpong, politics never was a matter of interest for him unlike
to his parents. In lieu of following the footsteps of his parents, Trilok chose
to stay away from politics since his school days; rather he developed a keen
interest in Taekwondo. With his dedication he has been able to make his passion
his profession. After attaining his school education from Kumudini Homes and
the Scottish Universities Mission Institution (SUMI), Trilok then enrolled
himself in St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling for further education. But the 1986
Gorkhaland agitation hampered his education compelling him to pursue his BA
Degree from Sikkim Government College, Tadong.
Trilok was already a
Black Belt 1st Dan by participating in an international
championship
before going to Sikkim. Now a Black Belt 6th Dan, Trilok has been
trained by Mar Tshering Lepcha, Passang Foning and Akhey Lee during his SUMI
days in 1981. With more number of international championship awards than
nationals his list of accomplishments comprise of 4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze
in international level and 2 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze in national level.
His record within the
last 5 years include 1 bronze in Commonwealth Championship- 2011, 1 gold in the
6th Malaysia Classic International Championship- 2011, 2 gold and 2
bronze in the 3rd Scottish Open International Championship, 1 gold
in the 1st World Goodwill Championship and 1 silver in the SAARC
Kickboxing Championship. Apart from these wins Trilok has also participated in
various international championships in Egypt, Uzbekistan, South Korea and SAARC
countries. With all these gold, silver and bronze under his belt, this
Taekwondo Champ has been able to carve a niche for himself and the nation as a
whole in the international level.
This son of Kalimpong
with a Diploma in Taekwondo from the National Games Academy, Bangalore and SAI
is not only the Sikkim State Coach but also holds a post of an International
Referee.
Right at the moment, Trilok
is on visit to his hometown, Kalimpong where he will be training 20- 22
children (coming from rural areas) through Jankidas Subba Memorial Taekwondo
Dojang. One of the students of this association, Robin Rai is already a Junior
National Champion and has also won silver in the Senior National Championships.
Trilok will be training the children of this association for the next 2 days whereas;
Robin will be imparting the training for the next 5 days.
Trilok now aims in
making Robin an international player who is undertaking Taekwondo lessons from
him. He is also working towards organizing a national level Taekwondo
Competition in the hills and Kalimpong. Speaking about the trainings this
dedicated coach says that a player needs to train for 6- 8 hours. He also feels
that the children from Darjeeling too have immense potential but it needs to be
nurtured well. Because of his vast contribution in the field of Taekwondo and
also in making the hills and the nation proud, Trilok has also been honoured by
the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) with Gorkha Gaurav Puraskar, Kalimpong
Sports Association and Darjeeling Tea and Tourist Committee.
