Single Girl Child Scheme must be initiated in educational institutions ran by the State Government, demands Krishak Kalyan Sangathan
MUKESH SHARMA
KALIMPONG, May 23:
In
order to keep the boy and girl child ratio equal in the country the Central
Government had initiated the Single Girl Child Scheme since 2005- 2006. Under
this Scheme those families are benefitted who have a single girl child, for the
Central Government will bear all her educational expenses and also she will be
granted a stipend of Rs 2000/- per month during her College education. One of
the main aims behind this scheme is to stop killing of a girl child in the
family.
But
in Darjeeling the said scheme is not being properly utilized for there are only
3- 4 Schools ran by the Central Government. The Kalimpong Krishak Kalyan
Sangathan General Secretary, Vishnu Chettri has demanded that the State
Government taking the example from the Central Government should initiate the
Scheme in the Schools, Nursing Institutions, Engineering Colleges and IT Colleges
which is ran by them (State Government). The General Secretary has forwarded a
letter to the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanding about the same. The
letter says that most of the educational institutions are ran by the State
Government and if the Government takes the initiative of introducing the Scheme
in these institutions then the people will be aware and will not think that a
girl child is a burden.
Chettri
further said that since the Central Government is bearing the educational
expenses of the girl child, it would be much better if they could look into
provisions regarding the seat reservations for the girl child while seeking for
employment too. Lastly, he also appealed all the administrators of the minor
Schools whose number is at large in the hills to work towards introducing the
said scheme for the girl child to flourish.
