Unanimous decision for GJM to partake in the GTA elections
MUKESH SHARMA
KALIMPONG, June 28:
After
their successful meeting with the Home Minister and various other Ministers,
the 5 member Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) faction will be returning in the hills
on June 29, 2012. The GJM today also held a meeting with the Chief Minister,
Mamata Banerjee at Kolkata. It has been informed that after their return the
GJM central Committee and Core Committee will be holding a meeting and whether
the elections are to be ran or not and further political programmes will be
decided.
Benay
Tamang informing about the same said that the GJM believes in transparency and
democracy and hence, a meeting was also held earlier at Darjeeling with the GJM
members from Terai- Dooars. The members have unanimously decided to participate
in the upcoming Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) elections, he added.
The GJM is still trying to understand and take the opinion of the Gorkhas and
the Adivasis of Terai- Dooars on what actually want. The meeting held at
Gorubathan also stressed that the GJM should partake in the GTA elections, said
Tamang.
Further,
he informed that only yesterday, a meeting was held between the Terai- Dooars
Coordination Committee, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), North Bengal Unit and all
GJM Units at Birpara during which it has been decided that the GJM will be
engaged in the elections.
When
asked about the demand of reservations for the SCs and STs in the elections,
Tamang mentioned that people have met with the GJM Chief a month ago regarding
the same and the Chief had directly clarified that it is not in his hands. “If
I could do something then I would definitely have done”, he had stated. The
Morcha Chief had further recommended them to consult the State Government in
this matter. Therefore, considering his recommendation, the people had
contacted the Government and now the decision lies in the hands of the
Government, added Benay. However, the Morcha President has demanded the
Government about the reservations, so now whatever the State Government orders
regarding the same, that shall be followed, he concluded.
